Top Five
One of my favorite games is “Top Five.” Top Five Favorite Movies. Top Five Bands of All Time. Top Five Things I’ve Done to Embarrass Myself. I had the arrogance to think I invented this game, but it turns out that John Cusack did a whole film utilizing this introspective device, namely High Fidelity.
Regardless, I already know what would be included in some of your Top Fives. A cure for diabetes would head up the “Top Five Things I Wish For” category. But there is more to us than Diabetes. That may be what brought us to this venue, but I want to know more, if you’re willing to share.
That brings me to … (drum roll not necessary but appreciated) ...
Here’s the deal: I will provide the scintillating categories and you provide your Top Five.
It’s true: The Fun Just May Never Stop.
And for those of you who check in here but are unwilling to join the threads regarding diabetes topics, here is your opportunity to post with ease.
1. Top Five Favorite Bands
2. Top Five Books I’ve Read
3. Top Five Things I’ve Done to Embarrass Myself
4. Top Five Movies, Ever
5. Top Five Idiosyncrasies I Lay Claim To
7. Top Five Items I Refuse to Eat
8. Top Five Categories I’d Like to See
I am looking forward to your responses. Game on.

Uh-oh. I am not so good at this kind of game. The world is full of so many amazing things that it's tough to choose just five of anything. It's such a commitment! And so revealing of my inner uncoolness. You know: "What you like is who you are," blah blah.
Okay, I will try a simple one. I really can't be SuperViolet if I can't make a silly list now and then, right?
Top Five Idiosyncracies
1. DUH
2. small talk impairment
3. really quite slovenly
4. obsessed Everquest player (I know, I know)
5. spinelessness
Your turn, K.
It;s nice to steer away from diabetes for awhile.
Top 5 bands (today) It changes often:
1. Flogging Mollys
2. Dropkick Murphys
3. The Mahones
4. Mad Caddies
5. Millencollin
Thanks for the break.
Jeff
Here are my top 5 movies ever:
1. The Breakfast Club
2. Goodwill Hunting
3. Dead Poets Society
4. Legends of the Fall
5. Jerry McGuire
(This is all from the top of my head, so I'm sure I'll think of some later that I'd rather have added)
Kerri, thanks for this. To echo type1dad, it's nice to come up for air and think about something else... with that I'll start with the "yucky" category:
Top Five Items I Refuse to Eat
1. Liver (Never. Never. Never.)
2. Clam Chowder (and I'm from NE!)
3. Escargot (a.k.a. snails.. 'nuff said)
4. Lima beans
5. Kim Chee (love Korean food, but
NOT this)
What's Kim Chee?
Top Five Fiction (ohh this one is very hard & I reserve the right to endlessly revise & they are not necessarily in order):
1. The Sound and the Fury, William Faulkner
2. The Earthsea Trilogy, Ursula LeGuin (is it cheating to list a trilogy?)
3. The Golden Compass, Philip Pullman (#1 in a trilogy, but it's better than the other two, and I am trying to minimize the cheating)
4. Charlotte's Web, E.B. White
5. A tie between a bunch of others. (#6 on Top Idiosyncracies: inability to make a decision)
Top Five Nonfiction:
1. Care of the Soul, Thomas Moore
2. The Way of Transition, William Bridges
3. Wisdom of the Enneagram, Riso & Hudson (anyone know the Enneagram? I'm a Nine.)
4. something about Myers-Briggs, but I'm not sure which one
5. another tie
Top Five Books I’ve Read
Wow I love this game however it is so difficult to limit my selection to five especially in the books category. I am a book Junky so my top five will be just what is still very vivid in my mind
1. Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri {I nominate this one as the best of 2004}
2. Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin {Best chick flick book 2003}
3. Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas By James Patterson {I nominate this one as the best of 2002}
4. A Woman’s Place By Barbara Delinsky and An Accidental Woman also by Barbara Delinsky {I grow up reading her every books, I do not read her as much now}
5. Queenie By Michael Korda {I nominate this one as the best of 1989}
I use to read my uncle’s James Hardly Chase novels when I was very little (grade school) He thought me to read which caused my parents to have sleepless nights wondering why their little girl is not reading Cinderella instead, half of the time I did not understand everything I was reading but my parents being upset over it made me read them.
Top Five Movies Ever
If you have not seen these movies run, do not walk to see them, start planning your weekend around watching these maybe not but I think they are good.
1. James’ Journey to Jerusalem {http://www.james-journey.com/}
2. Dance Like a Man {with Anoushaka Shankor, Norah Jones’ half sister not that it makes a difference it is a good movie}
3. Crash {now playing}
4. Y Tu Mama Tam bien
5. The Sound of music {it’s a classic}
Violet, "kim chee" is korean pickled vegetables. Now, if you look at the some of the ingredients, it might sound pretty good (various cabbages "pickled" with vinegar, garlic, hot peppers, etc...), but it's so dang sour. Ryan always tries to get me to have some when we go for Korean, and I HAVE tasted it. It's just toooo sour. And the smell is really funky to me. But, that said, YMMV.
Love your book list. Charlotte's Web was actually the first novel I read to Joseph-- he was 3 1/2, and our cat had just died. It really helped him understand the whole "cycle of life" concept.
And Sound and the Fury-- Excellent! When I read that (about 5 years ago) I remember having to take notes to keep my self oriented while reading that first section. What a fantastic, challenging read! Haven't read Le Guin's Earthsea Trilogy (only some of her short stories). I'll have to pick it up. It's been a while since I've read any sci-fi/fantasy...
Oooh this is really fun.
Kerri, you've got me thinking about my top five books now... I've listed some of my favorites in my blog profile, but now titles are bubbling to the surface to join them...
Soooo, here are the top five books I've read --though the list might change if you ask me again tomorrow :)
1. The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro (never saw the movie -- though I love Anthony Hopkins -- just think it would ruin this masterpiece for me)
2. To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis (extremely funny sci-fi mystery-- read it, and you will thank me)
3. Possession: A Romance by A.S. Byatt (Actually it's a literary mystery, and an enthralling one at that. Again, never saw the movie-- filmmakers always find ways to screw it up- just look at The English Patient)
4. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
5. Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris (Funniest. Man. Alive. -- read the story "Jesus Shaves" and you too will be convinced)
Sandra - Me talk pretty one day is very funny, David Sedaris makes mw wish I can meet his family the amount of material he pulls from them make them sound fun.
Ooh ooh Sandra...I adore Possession! It is in my tie for #5 for sure. And I never saw the movie for the same reason you never saw Remain of the Day.
Jeff, I am so unhip that I have never heard any of the bands you listed. Are the Flogging Mollys cousins of the Dropkick Murphys? They sure sound related.
Shannon, I must steal Breakfast Club from your movie list for my own. You may keep Dead Poets Society for now. But I reserve the right to steal it too.
K, Where Are Your Lists???
Is it okay to jump around? Some of these are too difficult. Things I'd like to say (someday)
5. I'd like to say "I've done that" alot more often.
4. Just once I'd like to say "take this job an shove it."
3. If at all possible I'd like to say "Thanks, God, I don't know that I deserve to be here but thanks"
2. Someday I'd like to say, "I have less stress than one person has the right to."
1. I know this is probably not in the spirit of letting go for awhile but, "Yes, Olivia, I'm serious. You're cured."
Top 5 Movies
5. Sound of Music, sorry Pearlsa had to steal it (not real manly though).
4. Hang'em High
3. Anything with John Wayne - western that is.
2. The Great Escape
1. Cool Hand Luke - "I don't care if it rains or freezes long as I got my Plastic Jesus sitting on the dashboard of my car..."
Sorry for the delay. Without further adeiu (is that how that word is spelled?)...
Top Five Favorite Bands:
1. Radiohead (have seen them 3x)
2. U2 (seen them once, will see them again in October)
3. Pearl Jam (seen 4x)
4. Damien Rice (seen once)
5. The Frames (seen twice)
Top Five Books I've Read:
1. Me Talk Pretty One Day (I've met David Sedaris ... will explain later on)
2. The Princess Bride (William Goldman)
3. Middlesex (Jefferey Euginedes)
4. A Walk in the Woods (Bill Bryson)
5. Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand)
Top Five Things I've Done to Embarrass Myself:
1. Fallen Down an Escalator at the Providence Place Mall
2. Yelled across a crowded dining room "Hey, why do you have a heart on?" which was miscontrued as something completely different
3. Crashed a moped on Block Island in front of a boy I was trying to impress
4. Got low and called a trio of paramedics "Fat F**ks."
5. I'm sure there are more, but I'm fresh out at the moment.
Top Five Movies, Ever:
1. Dead Poet's Society
2. Braveheart
3. Fight Club
4. Memento
5. An Uzi at the Alamo (see link on homepage!)
Top Five Idiosyncrasies:
1. Slightly OCD about the No. 11, washing the dishes, organizing items by size and genre on the conveyor belt at the market, and matching bras to shirts
2. Once I find a musical artist I like, I have to find everything they've ever put out
3. Same with authors
4. Same with directors
5. I hate the sound of balloon animals being made (that terrible squeaking) but I love balloon animals.
Top Five Things I Want to Accomplish:
1. Write a book
2. Become a diabetes lecturer
3. Have a child
4. Buy a brand new Jetta and seal the 1996 one shut, making a fish tank out of it.
5. Be part of a successful marriage
Top Five Items I Refuse to Eat:
1. Anything seafood because it's all chewy like raw fingers
2. Liver (ew)
3. Anything tongue-esque
4. Anything touted as "it tastes like chicken!" but I know better
5. Asparagus because I've been told it makes your pee smell.
Top Five Categories I'd Like to See:
1. Top Five Cat Names for my New Kitten
2. Top Five Favorite Authors
3. Top Five Memories from Childhood
4. Top Five Dreamy Bits
5. Top Five Things I Like About Myself
There you are, my dears. And I'm happy with all the participation. It's nice to take a break sometimes. And it's also nice to learn a little about one another. (Awwww. That sounded so serious.)
Carry on!
Here are my list of books:
1. East of Eden (my girl Oprah turned me on to that one)
2. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
3. Watership Down
4. "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret"
5. The Firm by John Grisham
Jeff, the bands you listed sound very Irish. Are they from Ireland?
Foods I refuse to eat:
1. Brussel Sprouts
2. Any kind of organ meat
3. Vegemite (tried it, hated it)
4. Sauerkraut
5. Pork Rinds
Okay, so Kerri. Do you have any idea how positively GREEN with envy I am at the moment? If someone were to ask "what two live shows would you most like to attend?" My answer would be U2 and David Sedaris. Back in the day, I went to MANY concerts, but was never able to score the U2 ticket. I. Am. So. Jealous. And. And. I was SUPPOSED to see Mr. Sedaris two years ago (after having read his books and listened to him on "This American Life" for years), but NOOO. We were hit with a snowstorm the night of the show. While waiting for pre-show seating, we were all told that Mr. Sedaris was stuck in Michigan, but (good news!) the appearance would be rescheduled... to a day I would be visiting family back east! UGHH!
Anyhow, I'm very happy for you.
Now that I'm a little calmer I can say that I loved, loved, loved Memento. And was fascinated with Atlas Shrugged (though I'm not so much in agreement with the politics espoused in there).
Oh, and Jeff-- The Great Escape. Right up there with The Guns of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare in my book. Classic.
Well, must go pack for our weekend in Chicago. We're visiting our old 'hood. Take care, and hopefully the game will still be on when I return. This is really fun.
I have been reading this blog from afar for quite some time now, thinking that it was not really my place to comment (primarily because I am not a diabetic -- although, someone I hold very dear to me is). At any rate, this time I simply couldn't sit back and watch this parade go by. With that, I offer the following:
TOP FIVE IDIOSYNCRACIES:
1. It grates me when people use the expression "I could care less." Somebody, anybody, please let these individuals know that if they COULD care less, then they really are affected by whatever it is they happen to be talking about. "COULDN'T care less," much better, thank you.
2. Same goes for "I will try AND get it done" or "You should try AND talk to them." Whatever the context of the sentence may be, the point is that if you try AND do something, that means that you will definitely accomplish the task right after you try doing it. But, if you "try TO get it done," or "try TO talk to them," there is room for you to screw-up. I'm not sure why, but this drives me up a wall.
3. I eat popsicles on the side of my mouth because even the mere thought of one touching my front teeth makes my shiver a bit.
4. I don't like for my ankles to touch. It kind of creeps me out. No idea why.
5. I sometimes like to eat fruit in the shower. And occasionally drink a beer.
TOP FIVE BANDS:
1. Oasis (new album, "Don't Believe the Truth," comes out on May 31st. Can't wait)
2. Pearl Jam
3. Beastie Boys
4. R.E.M.
5. Counting Crows
TOP FIVE MOVIES:
1. Hoosiers
2. The Graduate
3. Godfather II
4. Braveheart
5. Glory
TOP FIVE BOOKS:
1. Da Vinci Code
2. Angels & Demons
3. Bible Code
4. Larry Bird - Drive
5. On the Road
(Incidentally, these are also the only five books that I've ever read -- save for technical, how-to books and those I was instructed to read by a teacher or professor. But, in most cases, my friend Cliff -- author of many notes -- always helped me through these.)
TOP FIVE ITEMS I REFUSE TO EAT:
1. Geiger Counters
2. Folding Chairs
3. Aluminum Siding
4. Aqua Net Hairspray
5. My Buddy Luke (he's just too cool of a guy. Even if we were starving to death in the Himalayas, I think that I'd still let the guy live. Well...then again, depends on how hungry I am.)
TOP FIVE THINGS I'VE DONE TO EMBARRASS MYSELF:
1. Fill out this questionnaire.
2. Miss my acting audition, try to finagle a make-up date, succeed in doing so, go to make-up audition, get on stage, learn that I am there for a new play, learn that new play involves a dance number, realize that I am in a room full of people that think that I know how to dance, suddenly find myself in the throes of some career disaster, catch glimpses of the crowd's appalled looks as I spin around uncontrollably, and have the nerve to ask if I should expect a call-back.
3. Jack Tripper moments. While they are not mine, per say, I still feel embarrassed whenever a Jack Tripper moment arises. What is a Jack Tripper moment? Well, remember when Jack Tripper always used to find himself in some sort of predicament on Three's Company? And, you as the viewer knew that someone -- usually Mr. Ferely or Mr. Roper -- are about to catch Jack in a lie or something similar. Did you ever find yourself embarrassed FOR Jack? I know I did. I knew that what I was watching was a TV show and completely made-up, but yet I still could not avoid that squirmy, "I'm too embarrassed to watch" feeling. Moving to present day, any time an awkward situation or event takes place, I can't help but be embarrassed for those involved (even if I am not). Jack Tripper moments....yes, they too are my moments of embarrassment.
4. Shovelling fish guts every night so I can save money for a mini-golf course that I hope to someday build, only for my wife (who really isn't my wife, rather she is a millionaire who fell off of a yacht, washed ashore, lost her memory, and now is made to believe by me that she is my wife so I can get back at her, through grueling housework, for berating me over my non-cedar rotating shoe rack I built for her days prior)to find out that I really haven't spent all those nights bowling. Oh wait, that's not my life, that's the plot to "Overboard." My bad.
5. 14 years old. On vacation in Florida with my family. I'm in the bathroom....well, doing what a hormonally charged 14 year old boy does. My father accidentally walks in, not knowing that I was in there. I cover up...quickly. He apologizes, closes the door. I wonder if he saw me. Nah, he couldn't of....I covered up far too fast for him to see what I was doing. Later that day, walking across the parking lot at Epcot Center to catch the trolley, my sister complains that we would have been to the park much earlier had it not been for me taking so long in the bathroom. My father's quiet response: "Well, he's at that age." Busted.
That's just about all I have time for now. I'll try to complete the other questions later.
This is fun. Thanks.
OK, I'm playin', but since you don't have trackbacks enabled (!), I'm going to have to ask you to visit my blog to see my Top 5 Quotes These Days list...
-AmyT
Amy,
I don't have the option to enable Trackbacks ... I don't think. If anyone on blogspot knows how to set up Trackbacks, can you tell me?
And thanks for quoting me on your site. I'm glad what I wrote resonated.
Sandra,
On the U2 front, I saw them my senior year of high school for the Pop Tour in 1997 (Yes, they can out of a giant lemon for "Lemon." I was sold.) and I have tickets for the Boston show this October. They are the most amazing live act I have ever seen.
On the David Sedaris front, I heard him read at The Boston Symphony House on the very night the Sox swept the World Series. Let me just tell you that to hear him speak, actually meet him after his reading and have him chat me up and sign my book, and then to be in Boston as the roar of Victory echoed over the city for the first time in 86 years ... quite possibly one of the most satisfying nights of my life.
Jeff,
I have seen the Dropkick Murphys. They are a fun. Flogging Molly played in Providence a few weeks ago. I didn't make it to that show. Do you live in the NE area? We've had a run of good shows lately.
To Everyone,
You have all just expanded my reading list for the summer. I haven't heard of a number of your favorite books. I can't wait to devour them.
To Anonymous,
Aluminium Siding. That one gets me every time I read it.
Overboard is one of the most under rated but most enjoyed movies (by me, anyway) of all time. I want to build an Seven Wonders of the World Mini-Golf Course. And be thrown off a boat.
V,
You need to download some of these bands you haven't heard of. It's time to expand your musical horizons, my friend. What are your Top Five Bands?
Pearlsa,
Crash was an excellent movie. I saw it a few weeks ago and was very affected. However, someone pulled the fire alarm while I was in the movie theater, so I kind of had the mood broken, but my friend and I scored free passes, so what else should I see?? ;)

Kerri,
Have never seen either. Unfortunately they do not make it to Pennsylvania unless its with the "Warped Tour" and I'm much too old for that scene. Have to be satisfied with CDs.
Hi Kerri,
You need to install Haloscan on your blog to enable trackbacks. Go to haloscan.com to find out how. It's really easy.
Top Five Idiosyncracies
1. I spot every grammatical error on every sign I see ANYWHERE. I was at Whole Foods Market the other day and saw a sign that said "Breakfast at It's Best." Drives. Me. Nuts.

3. I check my book's Amazon.com ranking several times per day.

2. i don't own cable. there are probably 4 channels that i enjoy watching, but not so much that i'll pay $50 bucks a month for them. also, i am a dvd junkie, so i have another outlet for vegitative entertainment.
3. i am a dvd whore
4. i would rather pay $10 bucks for a new cd than have someone burn it for me for free. not because i feel like i'm stealing (see my apartment), but because i'd just rather have the real thing. this aggravates some people.
5. i always sleep away from the wall and without a pillow.
to accomplish-
1. pilots licence
2. skydiving licence
3. write/illustrate a comic book
4. go to the south pole, do a handstand, take a picture, thus proving that, if only for a minute, i had the world in my hands and was holding it above my head.

4. A Wrinkle In Time - Madeline L'Engle
5. Little Women/Little Men - Louisa May Alcott
Top Five Idiosyncracies
Heh. Yeah, only five?
1. I am a grammar and spelling freak. The greengrocer's apostrophe drives me right around the bend. People who say "would of" and "could of" make my brain hurt. "I could of went" brings me to tears.
2. I have to have my toes out from under the covers, no matter how chilly it is in the room.
3. If I make tomato soup, it must be Campbell's and I have to have Ritz crackers. No other brand will do.
4. I loathe black ink. I can't write with a black pen, it must be blue.

Thanks for coming by, Julia. Late entries are just as entertaining as the ones from May. Do you run a blog, or just passing through?
Late...
