On New Blogs. And I have a question.

Today's list:

1. There's a new diabetes blogger. And his dog has gas. I'd say more, but those two sentences alone have me in a smirky mood, so I'll let his blog speak for itself. Type3. Go say hi.

2. My cruise sets sail at the end of the month. Two issues here: I've decided to wear the pump instead of leaving it at home. You all played a role in guiding me, but the main selling point was not having to revisit the whole Dawn Phenomenon irritant. I get so spikey in the wee hours of the morning that my fear of losing the pump and the vanity of my bikini obsession doesn't win out over avoiding those highs. So I'm thinking about going "Un-tethered" and bringing a bottle of Lantus for the days we spend on the beach. Any thoughts/advice/warnings on this?

Second issue is that my phobic fear of flying has lead me to call my doctor and ask for an anti-anxiety medication to take before the flight. Yes, it's all mind over matter and I should try to conquer my fears vs. sedating them, but the idea of Chris having to deal with Hysterical Girl on the flight makes me feel so silly that I opted for drugs. Xanax has been the prescribed drug of choice. I know this could be a touchy subject, but has anyone taken anything anti-anxiety before? I have never taken any drugs and I am unsure about the effects on my bloodsugars and Self in General. Feedback on this is crucial. Feel free to email me if you don't want to comment on the blog. Please. I appreciate your help!

3. Thank you guys for your inspiring comments and emails about the blog awards. While I'm wordy about everything else, I can't seem to get past a stammering "Thanks," and blushing furiously. But know that I appreciate everyone's support and I'm proud to be a part of this. (Blushing again.)

4. Larry Bird. Today he called to ask me what I thought of his instinctive genius.

Man, he is just too much.

Addendum: Kassie, my dearest, this is for you.

Have fun on your cruise!! I wish I could offer advice, but I'm not experienced on the un-tethered technique or on Xanax.

I can't wait to read about your experience on the cruise.

Bon Voyage.

This is the guy who pioneered untethered. A lot of parents on the CWD mailing list have contacted him about it and he's responded to all of them. I would go to him with any questions and take whatever he gives you and contact Joslin with it. All the emails from those who are doing it have been very enthusiastic about it and they've all had good results.

I can't help you with the anti-anxiety drugs - I take Welburtrin, but that's for depression and isn't a one time thing. Again, I'd run it by your endo, although I can't see it having any effect on your blood sugars, except to possibly make you less aware of how you're feeling. You might want to have Chris make sure you check your bg regularly.

Dammit, I misspelled welbutrin.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for posting Type 3's link. You have no idea.

I've used Xanax (around my wedding when I was freaking out) and Ativan (as needed the past year or so since all my health stuff came to light). I much prefer Ativan - I'm not sure what it does to blood sugar levels, probably a slight raise.

No idea why that didn't paste entirely. There goes my whole "I'm so badass" vibe. Drat.

Apparently the link is too long. I've made an addendum to the post.

Kerri,

On the untethered regimen-- we did this last summer while vacationing on a lake. For the most part, it worked pretty well, with Joseph reconnecting for meals, and actually wearing the pump overnight (He was on a lower dose of Lantus because of the additional activity during the day, but ended up needing some additional basal insulin overnight). Of course, Joseph experienced a growth spurt that week, so all bets were sort of off.

On Xanax-- I've had no experience with this myself, but one of my brothers and a good friend used it a number of years ago -- both had very negative experiences. But both were on it for much longer than I believe you are contemplating here.

My understanding of how these drugs work though, is that you'd have to use it for a period of days before gaining any real benefit. I would ask about that, since you're really only looking for something to help you get through the flight...

More info on Xanax (side affects, etc.,) can be found here.

How long will you be in the air? A mom I know (who lived in Indonesia) used to give her son Benedryl to get through the long flight back to the states (it would make him drousy)... maybe something like that might help?

Or you could try having a few drinks... :)

Good Luck!

I took xanax once before a dentist appt (I have major dentist phobia) and it was so mild. I felt relaxed but not to the point where I was aware that I had taken something to make me feel that way - kwim?

My mom has a major flying phobia - she used to do xanax but prefers to booze it up a little now instead.

I'm so jealous of the cruise!! Can't wait to hear about it and how the untethered thing goes.

I've used Xanax pre-diagnosis and had no problems with it. I'll admit it. I liked it. I found it to be pretty mild, but I don't know about blood sugar effects. A co-worker also uses Klonipin(sp?). He claims it makes his flights quite nice. And lastly, if it's a long, long flight. I took Ambien for a 12 hour flight and "woke up" about 4 hours later. I italicize "woke up" because while my eyes were open and I was speaking, I was speaking dream gibberish that my wife found HI-larious. I quickly went back to sleep for another 4 hours and had no side effects.

I had no idea you loved Larry Bird. How very interesting.

Hi! I'm not a new blogger and I don't, strictly speaking, write a diabetic blog. Diabetes is a part of my life I just don't write about it much. I have conceded to creating a tag for it, however.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your writing and I hope to continue to read your blog for a long time to come.
