Part Two: In which Kerri solves the Gomez Quandry and remembers Reading Rainbow
Exploring the Sunset Strip, Chris and I sat at a stop light in our little hybrid.
“Listen, Kerri.” Chris paused, spreading his hands dramatically over the steering wheel. “Not a sound.”
The car seemed like it turned off when we were at stoplights. The motor made no sound. No clicks, no whirrs, no noises whatsoever. An odd sound to my ears accustomed to VW German performance engines.
Looking over to my right, there was a big black Escalade, windows opened. A handsome man dressed to the hilt, complete with enormous watch and crisply pressed shirt, stared straight
ahead.“Chris, it’s the guy from Reading Rainbow!” I tried to exclaim without moving my mouth. The Escalade started to pull away in anticipation of the light changing.
“He was in Roots. Did he play Kunta Kinte? I can’t remember,” Chris said.
“He played Kunta.” I said. The Escalade pulled ahead of us.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah. It says ‘Kunta’ on his license plate.”
Later on, we were walking down Hollywood Blvd. Passing the famous Chinese Theater, we stopped to take a few pictures. The boulevard was teeming with street performers dressed as Jack Sparrow, Hellraiser, Yoda, and Hagrid. People were stopping to have their picture taken.
“This is so fun!” exclaimed a young college girl to her friends, wrapping her arm around Shrek.
“Lady, we don’t work for free. Remember that,” responded Shrek with a growl.
Chris and I wandered down the street towards the Virgin Megastore. Bright red letters scrambled around the edge of the building like the New York stock exchange ticker. “In-Store Performance! Live! Gomez!!! 7 p.m.!!! March 24th!!!”
“Oh my god Gomez is coming here?! We have to see them! We have to!” Trying not to jump up and down but hardly able to control my excitement, I dug my fingers into Chris’s arm and danced around a little bit.
There’s a history with this band.
Back in 2003, I had tickets to see Gomez play at the Avalon in Boston. Drove up to Boston with my buddy from Ireland, talking about how excited we were to see the show. Tickets in hand, we ran to the club. No line outside. Weird.“We’re here for the Gomez show.” My friend told the six foot four bouncer with biceps like freight trains. Bouncer flexed and traced the outline of his muscle with a lazy finger. “Sorry. Show was last night. You missed it.”
So I’ve been this close to seeing Gomez before, only to have my own inability to check the date on the ticket keep me from indulging. I wasn’t going to miss them a second time.
And I didn’t.
Brilliant performance. Such a cool band. And I can't believe that the sources of those incredible voices were just a few feet away from me. Their new record is being released on May 2nd. Do yourself a favor and pick it up.
Tomorrow: Santa Monica beach. Universal Studios. And the plane ride home.

Wow, what a trip!! I have been waiting for that video to load like umm...30 minutes? Probably my techical difficulty. ;)
I am so completely pathetic. At the beginning, I thought you were referring to Gomez from the Adams Family.
He's dead isn't he.
It's not you JB - I think YouTube.com is just getting slammed with all of Kerri's faithful readers trying to get a glimps of it...
And how did I know you would be the first to comment on the highly anticipated Gomez post?
Did LeVar's license plate really say "Kunta"?
That Chinese Theater looks very cool. The whole place seems larger than life!
Poor Gomez from the Addams Family. I think he's very dead. But Google can neither confirm nor deny this, because I keep getting tangled in the links.
LaVar's license plate definitely said "Kunta." We laughed like maniacs for about 5 minutes after seeing that.
And hopefully you guys can access the YouTube thing soon... Gomez is just such a brilliant band. Even the 30 second clip is worth a listen.
Still waiting for the video to finish loading... don't want to give up as I'm curious to see the Gomez NOT from the Addams Family.
And a LeVar Burton sighting?
Evan would be positively pea-green with envy :-)
What a fun trip! I've now got the Reading Rainbow song in my head...
tek
So lucky. They are playing Housing Works in NYC tonite and I can't go 'cos I've used up all my concert goodwill for this month: The Pogues, Billy Bragg and Jill Sobule last week Arno tomorrow and Alejandro Escovedo on Friday. Gotta sleep sometime.
John Astin -- aka, Gomez Addams -- is indeed dead, folks. As a doornail. His son Sean is very much alive though (think back to those 80s films)
Me and my pop-culture knowledge are insanely jealous of you and Chris, Kerri, looks like you had a great trip!
Sean Astin would so play my brother when the movie of my life is made.
Maybe Don Cheadle will play me.
And Jane, you have to get there and see Gomez when they come to your town. Quit your job if you have to. It's that important.
You don't have to think back to the 80s for Sean Astin - he was Samwise Gamgees in Lord Of The Rings, too.
Jane - Billy Bragg AND The Pogues? The concert gods did indeed smile upon you. Was Shane McGowan coherent?
Kerri - So. Jealous. It sounds like a fantastic trip. And here I thought Grumman's had been torn down. I'm glad I was wrong.
Shane McGowan was nowhere near coherent in his recent visits to town. Yikes.
And thank you, re: the Sean Astin recent reference. Alas, we may not be friends anymore, Julia, when you find out I haven't seen those movies.
